1st – 3rd Grade

I love discovering texts for our earliest readers. Some of the magic of working in the education field comes from seeing how students’ faces light up when they discover books that they enjoy. In addition to capturing students’ interest, some of the best books for this age bracket teach big lessons and use beautiful language to do it. Below, check out some of the books I’ve reviewed on this blog so you can find the perfect book for your classroom or home.

Rosie Revere, Engineer
by Andrea Beaty

Illustrated by David Roberts
★★★★★

A great text for girls and boys alike that will help them discover the importance of failure. Beautiful language and illustrations tied with a great story and strong characters make this book an excellent choice for the classroom or for the young thinker in your life.

Max the Brave
by Ed Vere
★★★★★

A great fit for younger readers (or for read alouds by older siblings), Max the Brave combines Are You My Mother? with modern illustrations and a lovable main character. This is a very cute fit for Pre-K to 2nd grade classrooms. There’s a sequel, too!

Piper Green and the Fairy Tree
by Ellen Potter
Illustrated by Qin Leng
★★★★★

A great book for 2nd-4th grade chapter book readers. Your students will admire spunky Piper Green, appreciate her humor, and learn from her powerful lessons.

My Favorite Books for 1st – 3rd Graders

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind
by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer
Illustrated by Elizabeth Zunon

I used this book in my 3rd grade classroom to introduce the concept of wind energy during a unit on electricity and forces. The students loved discovering things hidden within Zunon’s incredible pictures, and students loved the (true!) story of how William was able to help his country. A story of resiliency and innovation, this is a great read for any 2nd+ classroom.
